About a half an hour drive from Falmouth are the Heritage Museums and Gardens in Sandwich.  The site is made up of three galleries and 100 acres of gardens, lawns and outdoor spaces.  While the gardens are pleasant year-round,  there may be no better time of year to pay a visit than now.  Many varieties of daffodils, crab-apple and other flowering trees, and rhododendrons, including  the dramatic Dexter Rhododendrons, are highlights of the spring season.

Even if the weather doesn’t cooperate, there’s plenty to do and see at the Gardens.  Permanent exhibits include the American Art & Carousel Gallery, which houses a 1912 working carousel, and the Automobile Gallery, a replica of the Shaker Round Barn in Hancock, Massachusetts, which showcases a collection of antique automobiles.  A Special Exhibitions Gallery features a series of traveling exhibitions. The 2012 season kicks off with Norman Rockwell: Beyond the Easel, which opens on May 5th.

Spend a leisurely and delightful day at the Heritage Museums and Gardens and you’ll be back in Falmouth in plenty of time for dinner!

No visit to Falmouth in the spring would be complete without a visit to Spohr Gardens.  The Gardens are six tranquil acres of woodland situated on Oyster Pond with views of Nantucket Sound and Martha’s Vineyard in the distance.  Open  year around, the high season is definitely spring, which  brings thousands of daffodils, followed by azaleas, rhododendrons and then daylilies.

Each year, the Gardens celebrates Daffodil Days, which in 2012 will take place on April 21 and 28.  There will be guided tours, activities for children and the opportunity to purchase Spohr Gardens merchandise.  You can even take home a piece of the Gardens by purchasing plants from there.  Your purchase will help to support the upkeep and maintenance of the Gardens and the volunteer efforts of the Friends of Spohr Gardens.

Osprey pair settles in on Mill Road in Falmouth

One of the most anticipated events in Falmouth every spring is the return of the ospreys.  In late March and early April, on the Shining  Sea Bikepath or along Surf Drive, it’s not unusual to see people gazing skyward, looking for their first glimpse of an osprey returning to one of the many nests in the area. Because ospreys are skilled fishers and eat almost nothing else, their nests are typically found near ponds, rivers, lakes, and coastal waterways. The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has a cam on a nest at its Quissett campus and it’s fascinating to watch these magnificent birds as they return to the area and set up housekeeping.  If it’s a successful nest in 2012, we’ll be able to observe eggs hatching, nestlings growing, and their first flights. Learn more about ospreys and follow the progress of the WHOI osprey nest, but beware, it’s addicting!  In the meantime, keep an eye to the sky.

Happy New Year 2012 to one and all! It is a beautiful first day in Falmouth.

The temperature is in the 60′s, the sun is shining brightly and the birds are singing in the trees. Let us hope that this is a sign of what 2012 has in store for us.

Just had to capture the elegant holiday sunset that officially ushered in winter here in Falmouth Village.  Our stores are bustling with post Christmas shoppers having a wonderful time bargain hunting.  As you stroll down festive Main Street, the aroma emanating from our Class A restaurants is the perfect invitation to just – saunter in!!

A brand new year is ahead and the Falmouth B&B Association is looking forward to an exciting new season, greeting past guests and meeting new ones.

There is a true feeling of Christmas in the air here in Falmouth as The Village is adorned in festive array with our very own greens: holly, boxwoods, cedar, pines/cones and garlands of cranberries.  True magic occurred on Sat. evening when the Village Green was lit where there was much ‘oohing and ahing’ heard from happy onlookers and, of course, lots of happy children when Santa arrived safe and sound!!
